A Life of Sacrifice, A Legacy of Opportunity
Ilano T. Tablac Sr., fondly known to family and friends as Ellan, lived a life defined by hard work, sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering love for his family.
Born in 1954 in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, he grew up knowing the realities of a simple and difficult life. Opportunities were limited, and he was unable to complete his education. But the hardships of his youth gave him something that would guide him throughout his life: a deep appreciation for hard work and a determination to build a better future.
As a young man, Ellan took whatever honest work he could find. He worked as a gasoline boy, cashier, machine operator, and in other jobs that allowed him to earn a living and move forward.
Searching for greater opportunities eventually brought him from Pangasinan to Metro Manila and later to the pine-covered mountains of Baguio City.
There, he met Erma Calpotura, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong partner.
Together, they built a family and raised three children. Like many fathers, Ellan dreamed of giving his children opportunities that he himself never had.
That dream required sacrifice.
For more than two decades, he worked abroad as an Overseas Filipino Worker in China. He endured long hours in factories, years away from home, missed celebrations, lonely holidays, and countless moments in the lives of his children that he could never get back.
But every sacrifice had a purpose.
Every long day of work, every remittance sent home, and every year spent away from his family helped provide food on the table, education for his children, and opportunities for a better future.
His love was not always expressed through grand words.
It was expressed through responsibility.
Through perseverance.
Through sacrifice.
And through the quiet determination of a father who wanted his children to have a better life than the one he had known.
In time, his sacrifices bore fruit.
All three of his children graduated from college and became professionals in their own right—an achievement that brought him tremendous pride and fulfillment.
Upon returning home to the Philippines, Ellan found happiness in the simple things he loved.
He spent time tending his garden, caring for plants, flowers, and landscapes with patience and dedication. He enjoyed making people laugh with his jokes, sharing stories, offering advice, and spending time with the family he had worked so hard to provide for.
He became a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather.
But perhaps his greatest legacy cannot be measured by titles, possessions, or achievements.
His greatest legacy lives in the opportunities he created for his children, the values he passed on to his family, and the generations whose lives became better because of the sacrifices he was willing to make.
Today, his children and grandchildren carry forward the fruits of his hard work.
The life he lived reminds us that greatness is not always found in fame or recognition.
Sometimes, greatness is found in an ordinary man who accepts extraordinary sacrifices so that his family can have a better future.
He worked so his children could study.
He sacrificed so his family could move forward.
He endured years away from home so that the generations after him could have opportunities he never had.
Ilano “Ellan” T. Tablac Sr. will always be remembered as a hardworking and responsible man, a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.
His jokes will be missed.
His advice will be remembered.
His sacrifices will never be forgotten.
And his legacy will continue to live through every generation of the family whose future he helped build.
A life of hard work.
A lifetime of sacrifice.
A legacy that lives on.
